SLAC on Tap- A battery walks into a bar...

January 27, 2020 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm
The Old Pro, Palo Alto

Free

X-ray vision might sound like the stuff of superheroes and science fiction, but at SLAC’s Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) it’s what allows scientists to peer inside batteries and see what makes them tick. Join us for SLAC on Tap at the Old Pro in Palo Alto where PBR (Pushing the Battery Revolution) expert Johanna Nelson Weker will share how she and other researchers use X-ray microscopy to reveal the inner workings of lithium ion batteries and find out how changes to their structure and chemistry ultimately lead to their failure. Have a drink, learn about battery research, and stick around after the talk for some trivia, giveaways and the chance to build a battery with beer.Johanna is a staff scientist working on X-ray characterization of energy materials at SSRL. Whether at home or at the pub, her beverages of choice include Belgian ales, Dalmore whisky, or a Sonoma red.
